This week, the Texas Tech football program has been holding high school football camps and one of the top junior quarterbacks in the country, Behren Morton, has been in attendance.

Though there remains plenty of work for Matt Wells to do in the 2020 recruiting cycle, the Texas Tech football coaching staff is always keeping an eye on the future.  And this week, a potential building block of the 2021 class has been in Lubbock attending Texas Tech football camps along with swarms of other high school prospects.

Behren Morton, a dual-threat quarterback from Eastland, Texas is considered by many to be Tech’s top 2021 quarterback target and it is easy to see why.  Already rated a 3-star prospect by 247sports.com, the 6’1″, 173-pounder is rated the No. 7 2021 dual-threat QB in the nation and the No. 32 sophomore in Texas.

Last year, Morton threw for 2,435 yards and 18 touchdowns while rushing for 146 yards and four more scores.  He completed 62.7% of his passes and threw only four interceptions, both unbelievable numbers for a sophomore.

Already holding offers from ten schools including Baylor, Kansas, TCU, Texas A&M, USC and Wisconsin, he has held a Texas Tech offer since last summer and though the coaching staff in Lubbock has changed since then, the program’s interest in this elite QB has not.  Morton has been busy this summer already having attended camps at Texas A&M and TCU and now Texas Tech.

But there is a connection to Lubbock that many believe will give the Red Raiders a leg up in this key recruiting battle.  From 2004-2008, Morton’s father James, was the head coach at Monterey H.S. so the Hub City must feel like home to Behren.  What’s more, he then spent seven years living in Midland while his father was head coach at Midland Lee, right in Texas Tech’s back yard.

Now playing for his dad in Eastland, Morton has become one of the most prized recruits in the nation over a year before his class will be eligible to sign their letters of intent.  In fact, schools can’t even send him an official written scholarship offer unit August 1st of this year but that has not prevented some big time programs from throwing their hat in the ring.

And by looking at how 247Sports rates some of his abilities, Morton’s heavy recruitment is understandable.  Rated a 9 out of 10 in delivery and an 8 out of 10 in intangibles, playmaking ability, pocket presence, accuracy and arm strength, it is possible that he is already one of the best QB prospects in Texas regardless of classification.

As Texas Tech continues to evaluate players this week, there will be plenty of new offers to go out and there may be some commitments.  And with next weekend set to be a time when numerous 2020 targets will take their official visits, there figures to be plenty of news on the recruiting front for the Red Raiders.  But keep an eye on 2021 standout Behren Morton because the West Texas product is going to be one of the biggest prizes up for grabs over the course of the next year.
