Ja’Lynn Polk, a 4-star wide receiver from Lufkin, has verbally committed to the Texas Tech football program.

The second-big time offensive talent to join the Texas Tech football team’s 2020 recruiting class this weekend is Ja’Lynn Polk.  Announcing his commitment via Twitter Saturday night, he joins 3-star running back Tajh Brooks as the newest skill positions recruits to jump on board the Red Raiders’ class during this crucial weekend when dozens of targets are on campus for official visits.

Polk, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect is rated the No. 76 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 62 overall player in the state by 247Sports.com.  He also holds offer from Arkansas, Arizona, Baylor, Illinois, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota and others.

Over the course of the last two seasons, Polk has grabbed a combined 77 passes for 1,362 yards and 15 touchdowns.  As a junior, he brought in 37 balls for 695 yards (18.7 yards per reception) and nine touchdowns.

According to 247Sports, he was timed at 4.63 in the 40-yard dash at a regional qualifying event for The Opening, the most prestigious national high school scouting combine in the nation.  He also had a 4.13 shuttle time and a 35.4-inch vertical jump.

Back in May, Polk narrowed his list of schools to four; Tech, Baylor, Arkansas and Arizona.  Now, he is a Red Raider as Matt Wells has won another key regional recruiting battle to go along with beating out TCU for the services of Brooks.

The Red Raiders are in an interesting place at receiver headed into 2019.  After losing 2018’s top two receivers, Antione Wesley and Ja’Deion High, it will be important for a number of pass-catchers on the roster to step up this fall.

Junior T.J. Vasher is the leading returning receiver after putting up 687 yards and seven touchdowns last season.  He has the talent and physical attributes to be an All-American candidate but he must become far more consistent, especially when making the routine plays.

Opposite Vasher, senior Seth Collins and redshirt freshman Erik Ezukanma will battle for a starting role with both expected to see the field.  Collins is moving back to outside receiver, which he played at Oregon state in 2017, after catching 32 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns from the slot last year.  Meanwhile, Ezukanma, a 4-star signee in 2018, saw action in only two games making two catches for 48 yards and a touchdown.

Like Ezukanma was in 2018, Polk now becomes the highest-rated player in the current Texas Tech football recruiting class.  He is the third player to commit to the Red Raiders in three days joining Brooks and defensive end Clinton Anokwuru, a 3-star prospect from the Houston area.

dark. Next. Tech football positions that could regress in 2019

The Red Raiders are looking for significantly better results on the recruiting trail under Matt Wells after signing just the No. 8 overall class in the Big 12 this year and the No. 10 class 2018 class in the conference.  What’s more, Tech entered this weekend with the lowest-rated 2020 class in the conference but that should change if  Wells and his coaching staff are able to keep adding players as talented and highly-regarded as Ja’Lynn Polk.
