Texas Tech football adds 3-star safety Kobee Minor to 2020 class

The Texas Tech football program has landed a verbal commitment from 3-star safety Kobee Minor from Lake Dallas, Texas.

Matt Wells’ busy summer on the recruiting trail has paid some serious dividends as he has added ten commitments to the 2020 class since the start of June. The latest is Kobee Minor, a 3-star safety from Lake Dallas, Texas, who committed to the Red Raiders on Monday.

Rated by 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 87 safety in the nation and the No. 192 player in Texas, Minor was in Lubbock in June for his official visit. In addition to the Red Raiders, he has offers from Cal, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Southern Miss, Tulane, and others.

In his last two seasons, the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder has amassed 181 tackles, eight pass breakups, and four interceptions. That includes 97 tackles last year as a junior when he garnered first-team all-district honors while playing corner.

"“Whenever Tech offered me, I was like, ‘this is someone that believes in me. I’m going to ride with them,’” Minor told the Denton Record-Chronicle. “When I took my unofficial [visit] there, the coaches just made it feel like it was home. They told me that I’d have a great chance of playing my freshman year. That was my main focus. I wanted to go somewhere that I could come in and play.”"

Given that Tech has no established starters at safety, there is reason for a young player like Minor to believe that he could see the field early. After losing both of last season’s starting safeties to graduation, Tech is searching for answers at the position. What’s more, Justus Parker, who is presumed to be one of the 2019 starters at safety is a senior meaning that the program will be churning the roster even more in regards to the secondary next offseason.

This is the third 2020 defensive back to commit to the Red Raiders joining 3-star Ryan Frank and unrated Je’Vaun Dabon. Last year, the program added only two defensive backs meaning that Wells and his staff will likely look to add more defensive backfield talent in this class.

Last year, Tech ranked second-to-last in the nation against the pass allowing over 288 yards per game through the air. What’s more, Tech intercepted only 12 passes with five coming from corner Adrian Frye and four coming from safety Vaughnte Dorsey, who exhausted his eligibility in 2018.

Additionally, the Red Raiders currently have two senior corners, Douglas Coleman and Desmon Smith (both of whom are expected to play significant roles this fall) meaning that the secondary could be a work in progress once again in 2020. Fortunately, the Red Raiders boast two more experienced and accomplished corners in the sophomore Frye and junior Damarcus Fields, who was an honorable-mention All-Big 12 selection in 2017 as a redshirt freshman, to lead the secondary after this fall.

With 12 commitments, the Red Raiders’ class is now up to No. 49 overall but it still remains just No. 8 in the Big 12. Hopefully, that ranking will keep increasing as Wells continues to grind away at putting his fingerprints on the program.
