Texas Tech football offers 4-Star defensive back Hunter Washington
The Texas Tech football program has extended a scholarship offer to 2021 defensive back Hunter Washington from Katy, Texas.
With five defensive backs on the 2019 roster being either seniors or juniors, replenishing that position group has to be a priority for the Texas Tech football program in the next two recruiting cycles. One major target they have extended an offer to is Hunter Washington, a 4-star defensive back from Katy, Texas.
The 5-foot-11, 178-pounder reported an offer from the Red Raiders Sunday on his Twitter feed. He is rated by the 247Sports composite rankings as the 19 corner in the nation and the No. 40 player in Texas for his class.
In addition to Tech, he holds offers from Ohio State, Mississippi State, Auburn, TCU, Virginia Tech, Houston, and Tulane. According to 247Sports, Washington has taken unofficial visits to TCU and Texas A&M while also attending one of the Aggies’ high school camps.

He reportedly was timed at 4.74 in the 40-yard dash at The Opening Regional event in March. At that time, he also had a 4.25-second shuttle and a 32.6-inch vertical.

Tech will enter the upcoming season with starting safety Douglas Coleman and potential starting corner Des Smith as seniors. What’s more, two other potential starting corners, Zech McPhearson and Damarcus Fields will play as juniors this fall. Tech will also have key reserve, Thomas Leggett as a junior in 2019 meaning that by the time Washington is set to arrive on campus, the names that have become so familiar in the Red Raider secondary in recent years will be gone.
In 2019, Tech signed Alex Hogan from Houston and Dadrion Taylor, a running back from Oklahoma who has converted to defensive back but that is far from a full class in the secondary. Already in 2020, the Red Raiders have four defensive backs committed with Ryan Frank, a three-star prospect from Magnolia the only corner of the group. The rest of that foursome, Jonathan Davis from Dallas, Je’Vaun Dabon from Houston, and Kobee Minor from Dallas, are all 3-star safeties.
As for the class of 2021, Washington is the second defensive back to report an offer from Tech. Jimmy Wyrick from Dallas, a 3-star DB and the No. 61 player in Texas, also has an offer from Matt Wells’ program. In addition, Tech has extended offers to safeties J.D. Coffey from Kennedale and Kendal Daniels from Oklahoma.
This fall, Tech will be looking to improve its passing defense after finishing last year second to last nationally by allowing over 280 yards per game through the air. However, the secondary did come up with eleven interceptions, five coming from Frye and four by safety Vaughnte Dorsey who has exhausted his eligibility.
In the new more aggressive scheme of defensive coordinator Keith Patterson, the corners will have to be ready to play more press coverage and will also likely be put on more of an island, especially when Patterson decides to blitz. That will be a significant difference from the way the corners have played in recent years as former DC David Gibbs had his defensive backs play off the receivers to minimize the big plays.

Washington is one of the best players in Texas in 2021 and pulling him in will be tough. Should the Red Raiders win this in-state battle, it would be a tremendous statement about how the new coaching staff will be able to recruit to Lubbock.
