It is being reported that the Texas Tech basketball program will host its top target in the 2020 recruiting class, Micah Peavy, this weekend.

Though all eyes will be on Matt Wells and the Texas Tech football team as they kick off the 2019 season on Saturday, as usual, Chris Beard will be putting in some serious work as well.  That’s because the Texas Tech basketball program is set to host 4-star guard/forward Micah Peavy from Duncanville for a critical official visit this weekend according to Carlos Silva Jr. of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

The 6-foot-5, 175-pounder teamed up with current Red Raider freshman Jahmi’us Ramsey last season to help bring the 6-A state title to Duncanville.  Now, the Red Raiders hope that tandem will reunite in Lubbock and take the Red Raiders to the heights of the college game.

Rated at the No. 44 player in the nation and No. 2 player in Texas by 247Sports, Ramsey is Chris Beard’s top priority in the current recruiting class.  Helping that effort is the fact that Beard and Micah’s father, David Peavy (who is also the head coach at Duncanville) have known each other for quite a while as the pair have crossed paths many times in the nomadic world of basketball coaching.

In addition to Tech, Peavy is expected to visit Texas and Florida this month.  He also holds offers from Arkansas, TCU, LSU, Houston, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, and A&M.

In this spring’s state title game, Peavy scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to earn MVP honors and help lead Duncanville to its first championship since 2007.  And after a strong showing on the summer AAU circuit where he averaged 12 points and 5.2 rebounds per game against the nation’s elite prospects, he’s seen his stock soar even higher.

"“Average size for his skill set” writes 247Sports’ Jerry Meyer, “but has good core strength and is a smooth athlete with burst. Expertise is scoring off the dribble inside the arc. Shooting range is limited. Handles ball adequately and is a tough rebounder. Also is a quality and versatile defender. Could become an NBA player with development.”"

What makes Peavy such a perfect fit for Chris Beard’s team is that he is one of the most versatile prospects in the nation.  More than just a scorer, he is a floor general who can bring a number of different skills to the court.

Tech brought in a similar player this offseason in grad transfer Chris Clarke from Virginia Tech.  The 6-foot-6, 220-pounder is expected to be a catalyst of the offense and handle quite a bit of the point guard duties.

But after this year, Clarke will be out of eligibility leaving a sizeable void in the roster.  That’s why Peavy makes all the sense in the world for the Red Raiders.  His game would be a perfect addition to next year’s team because he can step in and take over the role that Clarke will be playing this year, which will look somewhat similar to the role Jarrett Culver played in 2018-19.

Tech already has one versatile forward committed for 2020, Chibuzo Agbo, a 6-foot-7 forward from San Diego, California.  If Peavy were to join him, the Red Raiders would be on their way to securing their second-straight top-20 recruiting class which would not be good news for the rest of the Big 12.
