DL Broderick Washington

Unlike the other players we’ve discussed, senior defensive lineman Broderick Washington has nothing to prove to his coaches, teammates, or Red Raider fans.  But outside of Lubbock, he is a relative unknown despite having had a very good career.

More from Wreck'Em Red

Though it feels to us in the scarlet and black that Washington has been one of the better defensive linemen in the conference for some time now, he’s yet to earn All-Big 12 recognition.  In each of the past two years, he was named honorable-mention all-conference despite having stats that were comparable to other top linemen in the league.

If he wants to make his presence known on the Big 12 and national scene, he has a fantastic opportunity to do so against OU’s stud center, Creed Humphrey.  Those two will likely do battle quite often today and if Washington can gain the upper hand, he will see his NFL stock rise as well as earn some serious respect from people that may not know too much about the former high school offensive lineman.

What’s more, it Tech wants to make this game close, Washington and the rest of his teammates have to be stout against the run.  The Sooners lead the Big 12 with over 324 yards rushing per game, over 60 more than second-place Kansas State.

What’s more, Sooner QB Jalen Hurts is second in the league in rushing (124.3 yards per game) and RB Trey Sermon is 10th (66 yards per game).  You may remember Sermon from last year when he ran for 206 yards and three touchdowns against the Red Raiders in Lubbock.

Tech must be strong in the middle of the field today.  So Jordyn Brooks and Washington have to be impactful.  While most around the conference know Tech’s middle linebacker, they may learn quite a bit about big Broderick Washington if he can stand out against a very good OU line.
