Texas Tech basketball: Top 50 recruit may be close to picking Red Raiders
For almost two years, the Texas Tech basketball team has been recruiting top 50 national prospect Micah Peavy and now, the 4-star wing may be nearing a decision.
The 2019-20 Texas Tech basketball season is set to begin Tuesday. But the 2020-21 team may pick up a huge win on Monday.
That’s because 4-star wing Micah Peavy of Duncanville has tweeted out that he has a “big announcement” set for Monday morning. This is leading most to assume that he’s ready to make his verbal commitment.
The 6-foot-5 combo guard has been focusing heavily on his recruitment in recent weeks. He was in Lubbock in late August for an official visit and just last month, he was in Austin for an official.

It’s believed that TCU is also in the mix as the Horned Frogs have the proximity card to play. But working in Tech’s favor is the fact that Beard has known Peavy’s father, who is also his high school head coach, for years as the two have frequently crossed paths on the basketball circuits of Texas.
Another connection between Peavy and the Red Raiders is that one of his teammates from last season’s 6-A state championship team, Jahmi’us Ramsey, is set to play a critical role for Beard this year.
Perhaps those connections and Beard’s dogged pursuit of Peavy, who has been his top target in this class for at least the past calendar year, are why most believe that the Red Raiders are in great shape in this key recruiting battle.
All eight of the experts that have their predictions posted on 247Sports believe Tech will be Peavy’s choice. Meanwhile, the same can be said of the six insiders at Rivals.com, the most notable of which, Corey Evans, changed his prediction from TCU to Tech on Thursday night.

This would be a critical addition for Beard. That’s because Peavy seems to be cut from the mold that most resembles what the Red Raider head coach wants in a player.
"“Average size for his skill set, but has good core strength and is a smooth athlete with burst,” writes Jerry Meyer of 247Sports. “Expertise is scoring off the dribble inside the arc. Shooting range is limited. Handles ball adequately and is a tough rebounder. Also is a quality and versatile defender. Could become an NBA player with development.”"
That last line has to jump off the page to Red Raider fans. The fact that Beard has taken two players in Jarrett Culver and Zhaire Smith from 3-star high school prospects to NBA lottery picks in the last two years has to appeal to a player of Peavy’s caliber.
The No. 43 player in the nation and the No. 2 player in Texas this year, Peavy would be the third top-100 national prospect to join the Red Raiders in the last two recruiting cycles joining Ramsey (No. 32) and Terfence Shannon Jr. (No. 90), both of whom will be true freshman in Lubbock this year.
Given that Beard reached the National Title game with a roster of 3-star players and grad transfers last season, it’s exciting for Red Raider fans to think about what he could do with a roster full of players as talented as Peavy. Hopefully, on Monday Peavy will tell us that he wants to find that out as well.
