Texas Tech basketball signee Micah Peavy to face sons of LeBron, Dwyane Wade

Later this month, Texas Tech basketball fans can watch 2020 signee Micah Peavy take on a team featuring the sons of NBA legends LeBron James and Dwayne Wade in Dallas.

A year before he ever takes the floor for the Texas Tech basketball program, 2020 signee Micah Peavy will be playing in a game that will have the attention of a huge section of the basketball world.  That’s because on November 30th, Peavy and his Duncanville Panthers will take on California power Sierra Canyon at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Though this game features the defending Texas 6A-champions hosting the defending California Open Division state champions, the buzz centers around who is playing for Sierra Canyon.  Two of the stars for the most high-profile team in the Sunshine State are LeBron James Jr. and Zaire Wade, son of former NBA great Dwyane Wade.  What’s more, the team also has three other players ranked in the top 15 nationally in their respective recruiting classes.

This game is part of the Thanksgiving Hoopfest, which was originally set to be held to Duncanville H.S. but was moved to the home of the Dallas Mavericks because of ticket demand.  Tickets can be purchased at this link.

This will be a chance for Peavy, the No. 44 player in the nation to impress on one of the biggest stages imaginable.  Should he have a dominant showing, he could see his ranking rise even higher and make a bid to become a 5-star prospect (not that his ranking matters in the grand scheme of things).

It will be interesting to see how Peavy fares against such prospects as B.J. Boston (the No. 16 player in the 2020 class and a 5-star Kentucky commit) and Terren Frank (the No. 110 player in the 2020 class and a 4-star TCU signee).  In addition, Sierra Canyon will bring Ziaire Williams, the No. 5 player in Peavy’s class and Amari Bailey, the No. 10 player in the class. They even have a center from China, Harold Yu, who is 7-foot-2.

But it is Lebron James Jr. and Zaire Wade that bring the headlines.  “Bronny” James is just a freshman but at 6-foot-2, 165-pounder he is already one of the top high school prospects in the nation.  Meanwhile, Zaire Wade is a 3-star prospect in the class of 2020 and the No. 196 player in the nation.  He has offers from DePaul, Nebraska, Toledo, and Rhode Island.

In fact, the buzz surrounding this year’s Sierra Canyon team led to a media day event similar to the Big 12’s Media Day with television crews and the works.  They began their season with a 12-day trip to China and will play games in eight states this year.  (Again, it is easy to see why college basketball prospects are more willing than their football counterparts to play their college basketball far from their hometowns.)

"“We had a four-week media training where an instructor came in and talked to them about social media and how to interview and how to carry themselves,” head coach Andre Chevalier told Arash Markazi of The Los Angeles Times. “The instructor showed them how a good social media brand looks and how a bad one looks so hopefully they will learn from that and take advantage of this time they live in and use their social media for good and for improving their brand.”"

Fortunately, Chris Beard isn’t building his program around players that are concerned with building their brand before they even attend their senior prom.  But Red Raider fans will be interested to see how one of the key members of the program’s highest-rated signing class of all time will fare against some of the nation’s most elite programs.

Peavy, 5-star guard Nimari Burnett, and 3-star guard Chibuzo Agbo Jr. all signed their letters of intent with the Red Raiders on Thursday and comprised the No. 5 2020 signing class in the nation according to 247Sports.  Interestingly, like the Sierra Canyon players, both Burnett and Agbo are Southern California prospects. (Though Burnett is originally from Chicago, he is playing his high school basketball in the Los Angeles area.)

The son of his high school head coach, Peavy is about as far from being a high school celebrity worthy of a media day but that doesn’t make him any less of a prospect.  So don’t be surprised if, Tech’s future star shines the brightest later this month despite being on the floor with a high school team that is as close to being the Harlem Globetrotters as any prep team could be.
