We can all stop fighting about Matt Wells for a few months

While I still believe that the vast majority of Texas Tech football fans want nothing more than for this current coaching staff to turn this program around, there’s no question that the fan base is divided over whether or not that is going to happen.  And the most vocal segment of the Red Raider populace is the contingent who already want Wells’ head on a platter.

It’s tiresome.  Not only because that swath of the fan base can’t seem to have a reasonable and calm discussion but because most Tech fans are tired of fighting about this program’s head coach.

In the ten years since the inglorious end of the Mike Leach era, the only time that there hasn’t been an ongoing spat about the head coach was the first three years of Kliff Kingsbury’s tenure.  Sure, people have had opinions about every head coach to ever put on the headset in Lubbock but in the modern era of social media and online message boards, there is no end to where the debates can be had and how nasty they can become.

But hopefully, with Wells out of the spotlight save for the two national signing periods for recruits and spring practice, the current round of bickering can die down a little bit.  It’s something we all could use a break from because it does no one any good.

The reality is that Wells isn’t going anywhere for at least another two years, and then only if he’s failed so magnificently that he’s left this program in complete ruin the likes of which we’ve never seen.  So long as he is able to get Tech to a competitive level and back to being a bowl team more often than not, he’s going to be Kirby Hocutt’s guy.

And likely for as long as he is, people will be fighting about him, unless he wins a Big 12 title, which no man has ever done at Tech…not even Saint Leach.  But it will be nice for that debate to take a back seat to basketball and baseball season because thankfully, on those fronts, we are all united.
