We are about to have more Chris Beard in our life

After last season’s magical run to the National Title Game, life felt empty without a steady dose of Chris Beard to entertain and inspire us.  Thankfully, the most beloved head coach in Texas Tech history is back in the swing of things and we are about to be regaled with more Whataburger anecdotes, Fireside Chats, and downhome witticisms…solid.

The West Texas version of the basketball messiah, what Beard has built in Lubbock remains mind-blowing.  He has gone into the heart of football country and made basketball the hottest game in town.

Along the way, he’s become the face of the university the way no one since Mike Leach has been able to.  He’s brought excitement, credibility, and success to a sport that Texas Tech fans only marginally cared about, even when Bob Knight was at the height of his powers in Lubbock.

For as much of a beating as the Matt Wells argument has been this year, Tech needs the unity that Beard can bring.  There’s simply no faction of the fandom that has anything to complain about when looking at the state of Tech hoops and that’s refreshing.

When Red Raiders are united, it is truly amazing what they can become.  Look no further than what we see on a game-by-game basis at the U.S.A.

When it’s basketball season, adults don’t complain about the students, the boosters don’t try to undermine the head coach, the internet message boards and our social media feeds are far more civil and we are all pulling in the same direction.  The results are often beautiful.

At the center of it all is the Pied Piper of Lubbock, Chris Beard. There’s nothing that we need more after a 4-8 football season than a regular does of Beard in our lives.
