No more discussions of why the fans aren’t showing up

As the Texas Tech football program has descended towards the bottom of the Big 12, it should come as no surprise that attendance at Jones Stadium has waned.  But while that problem shouldn’t be hard to understand, it’s still been rather hard for some to accept.

In fact, that has become one of the main storylines around this program and a near obsession for some fans.  Don’t get me wrong, it makes me sad to see a half-empty stadium each Saturday after being raised on Tech football in the 2000s when the Jones was at its most rambunctious.

But it is going to be nice to have a break from talking about why fans aren’t showing up.  That’s because it is no longer a problem for Tech basketball or baseball.  In fact, both programs now have a waiting list for season tickets.

We get to spend several months free from any theories as to why there are so few students at games and we don’t have to try to entice them to show up by giving away scholarships as the football program did for the final home game against Kansas State.  Rather, officials have to turn students away at the door for basketball games…even in November.  These are strange times indeed.

It will be refreshing to go to Tech basketball and baseball games knowing that the seats will be full and we can worry about what happens on the court of the diamond.  After all, those programs have figured out the magic formula for attendance…win games at home.

dark. Next. The one task Tech must accomplish this offseason

While Tech football has won just two Big 12 home games in the last two years, the basketball team has lost just two games of any sort in Lubbock in the same timeframe.  Is it any wonder there’s no problem getting fans to show up for Beard’s program?  Now, Wells has nine months how to figure out to get his football program to follow that blueprint.
