Texas Tech basketball: What we learned in win over UTRGV
Jahmi’us Ramsey is healthy and ready to lead the team once again
Making his first appearance since Thanksgiving night, freshman sensation Jahmi’us Ramsey appeared to get stronger as the game progressed and showed no ill-affects from the hamstring injury that cost him his last four games.
In the first half, he was just 1-4 and had just three points. What’s more, his shot looked off as he went 0-3 from deep.
But after the break, just like the rest of his team, he broke out. Including two makes from behind the arc, he was much more efficient in the second half as he scored 12 points.
What was most important for us to see was that Ramsey was as explosive as he’s ever been as a Red Raider. The hamstring injury looks to be completely behind him and once he converted an alley-oop dunk in the first half, on which his head was at the rim, there was no reason to wonder if he was fully healed.
He also was more than willing to mix it up during his return as he pulled down five boards. Additionally, he had two assists in his 31 minutes of action.
"“He was being aggressive, a lot of times people come off an injury and it takes a while for them to come back,” Beard said. “He practiced full time Wednesday and Thursday and we felt confident he was ready mentally and physically. We’re not big into load management. I won’t play a player unless they are 100 percent cleared by doctors and trainers.”"
Tech needs Ramsey’s athleticism. He provides the offense a second elite slasher to go along with Terrence Shannon Jr. That’s an aspect of the game that will be critical as we move forward because the Red Raiders are not a team that is going to overwhelm teams with outside shooting.
The great news to come out of this game is that Tech’s leading scorer is back and at full-strength. Though there were some signs of rust early, he still led his team with 15 points and now, Beard has his alpha dog back just in time for Big 12 play.
