More than one reputable publication is reporting that the Texas Tech football program might have to fend off Miami to retain offensive coordinator David Yost.

It seems like just about every offseason, there is some type of movement within the Texas Tech football coaching staff but many thought that Matt Wells’ staff might remain intact this year after just one season on the job.  However, more than one publication is reporting that the Miami Hurricanes could have an interest in Red Raider OC David Yost.

There’s an opening for a new offensive coordinator in South Florida after the firing of Dan Enos, who oversaw an offense that was embarrassed in a 14-0 loss to Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl on Thursday.  In his only season with the Hurricanes, Enos saw his offense struggle to the tune of just 25.7 points per game.

Now, Yost’s name is being floated around South Florida as a possible target.  However, the reports thus far only name Tech’s current OC as a name that Miami could or should target.  There have been no reports that the Hurricanes and head coach Manny Diaz have contacted Texas Tech about their OC.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald says that Yost, former North Carolina coach Larry Fedora, and Rich Rodriguez, the Ole Miss in 2019 who is likely to be looking for work after a coaching change in Oxford, would be his three top choices.

"“UM needs more than a new coordinator,” Jackson writes.  “It needs a new scheme. It needs at least two new starters on the offensive line – probably more – because this unit isn’t Power 5-caliber. And most importantly, UM needs a new quarterback, because it would be foolish to expect Jarren Williams or N’Kosi Perry to suddenly become consistent and reliable.”"

Of course, if Miami is looking for a new quarterback, Yost might not want to head to South Beach when he has Alan Bowman set to return to lead his offense in Lubbock.  Though Bowman is yet to prove that he’s the all-conference caliber of player that we’ve seen in some games, he appears to be a significantly better option than any on the Miami roster.

Meanwhile, Manny Navarro at The Athletic says that he believes Yost is Miami’s “preferred choice“.  If that is true, it seems like Tech might have to pony up to keep the man who led the 2019 offense to a No. 11 overall finish in total yards this fall despite playing his third-string QB for nine games and having a truly pedestrian set of receivers to work with.

Of course, if Miami wants Yost, they will have to spend some serious cash as well.  That’s because he was given a 3-year deal worth $600,000 per season last year when he arrived.  The same deal was given to defensive coordinator Keith Patterson.

Giving coordinators multi-year deals is rare, especially ones three years in length.  That’s an indication of just how important Yost and Patterson are to Matt Wells and that would lead most to believe that the Red Raiders will be willing to match whatever the Hurricanes might be able to offer. Still, this is a story worth watching this offseason.
