This weekend, Texas Tech basketball 2020 signee Micah Peavy was named the MVP of the prestigious Whataburger Basketball Tournament, one of the nation’s top events.

Whataburger is more than a restaurant in Texas, it is a way of life.  And every December, it is also the title sponsor of one of the nation’s top basketball tournaments.  This year, Micah Peavy, a 2020 Texas Tech basketball signee was the one making fans drool like at No. 5 with bacon and cheese.

The 6-foot-7 forward from Duncanville, Texas led his team to the Orange Division Title and earned MVP honors along the way.  Don’t forget that last season, he and current Red Raider Jahmi’us Ramsey led Duncanville to the 6-A state title and Peavy was named MVP of the title game.

In the title game of the Whataburger Tournament, Peavy led his team with 14 points in a 70-51 victory over South Grand Prairie.  That came after he had 17 points in the semifinals including the game-winner as time expired to lead his team past South Oak Cliff.  In that game, Peavy scored 35% of his team’s points in a 48-46 cage match.

More from Wreck'Em Red

Peavy signed with the Red Raiders this fall as the No. 43 player in the nation and the No. 2 player in Texas according to 247sports.com. With his size and all-around game, he’s drawn comparisons to Jarrett Culver, the 2018-19 Big 12 player of the year and the No. 6 overall pick in this summer’s NBA Draft.

Last month, Peavy also had 18 points and 12 rebounds in a loss to Sierra Canyon from California.  That game, played at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, was notable because playing for Sierra Canyon were the sons of both LeBron James and Dwayne Wade.

For the year, the future Red Raider is averaging 16.1 points, 8 rebounds, and 45. assists per game according to MaxPreps.com.  That includes a 27-point outburst against Lewisville in November.

This is the second time in the last month that Peavy has stood out during a premier event.  In Mid-December, he was part of the Ozark Mountain Shootout and impressed when playing against one of the nation’s top recruits, Caleb Love, a 5-star commit headed to North Carolina.

Rivals.com analyst Eric Bossi was on hand and came away more than impressed with tech’s latest star in the making.

"“Peavy had his confidence on the offensive end and was thus able to dictate play on both ends of the floor,” Bossi wrote after seeing Peavy.  “He also gave the crowd a show with above the rim finishes and endless energy.“Today’s game is all about versatility and being able to provide value in many ways and Peavy does that.  Yes, his jump shot needs work and he has to get more of a left hand. But, his leadership, athleticism, work on the glass, scoring in transition and elite defensive potential make him the kind of guy that any coach would want on their team.”"

Beard was on hand to see his latest prized signee dominate again in one of the most prestigious events in the nation and the top event in Texas over the weekend.  And given what Peavy put on display, Beard had to be as excited for the future of Red Raider basketball as the rest of us are.
