No. 4: Kurt Wilson’s Super Regional Homer sends Tech to Omaha
The single-most clutch play from a Red Raider in 2019 came in game-three of the Lubbock Super Regional in May. With his team trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the 8th, Kurt Wilson came through with a three-run homer to ultimately send his team to Omaha. It was the exclamation point on one of the best games in Red Raider history.
Tech actually entered the inning down two runs but Josh Jung cut the deficit in half with a solo shot to lead off the 8th. When Cam Warren and Cody Masters reached base on walks, the stage was set for Wilson and he delivered.
Entering the game, the sophomore had been just 2-10 in the series. What’s more, he had hit just three homers on the season and had actually opened the year as a relief pitcher.
Most fans might not remember, but this win came with leadoff hitter and All-Big 12 honoree Gabe Holt sidelined with a broken finger. But even without their offensive catalyst, the Red Raiders moved to 5-1 on the season over the Cowboys.
To open the Super Regional, Tech secured another 8-6 win. But in game two, the Cowboys answered with a 6-5 triumph to set up a decisive final game.
In that winner-take-all showdown, there were five lead changes but of course, none were as dramatic as Wilson’s shot in the 8th. It sent Tech to Omaha for the second-straight year, a first in program history and another step in the evolution of the program. It also gave us our No. 4 moment of 2019.
