No. 4: @ Texas

One of the more underrated performances of Shannon’s season was his 13-point, 6-rebound effort in Austin to help the Red Raiders secure a 62-57 win over the Longhorns.  In many ways, it was a typical game by his standards as it was one of eleven games in which he scored between 10 and 14 points.

But what made this performance stand out was Shannon’s offensive efficiency.  Going 6-8 from the floor for the game, he was a catalyst in Tech’s 17-point comeback victory.

Being as nine of his points that afternoon came in the first half, it would be easy to overlook his contribution.  However, it was in that first half that the Longhorns could have put the Red Raiders away.

When Shannon made his second basket of the game, Tech was already behind 22-8 and in danger of being blown out of the Erwin Center.  But thanks to a nice finish to the half, the Red Raiders cut the deficit to 31-19 by the intermission giving them an opportunity to come back in the second half.

In the second half, his layup with 12:45 to play pulled Tech to within 41-38 and his final basket of the day put his team up 56-54 with just 2:31 remaining.  Those were timely buckets that helped the Red Raiders claw back into a game that looked like it was all but over in the first half.

Interestingly, the headlines that day went to a player in T.J. Holyfield, who scored just two points.  That’s because he had five huge blocks including three dramatic rejections in the final 30 seconds of the game to help preserve what was at the time just a one-score lead.  But we should also appreciate the workman-like performance of Shannon, the team’s second-leading scorer in that game because he made some timely plays to help his team to one of the season’s best wins.
