Hawaii transfer Drew Buggs

It’s hard to ever imagine wanting to leave Hawaii voluntarily but that’s what 6-foot-3 guard Drew Buggs is considering.  Though there have been no indications that he has heard from Tech, he’s an interesting player to consider because he’s a pure point guard, which is something the Red Raiders are missing.

This past year, he averaged 9.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game.  What’s more, in just three seasons, he became Hawaii’s all-time leader in assists.

"“The consummate competitor and leader,” a scout told Goodman.  “Really understands his abilities and plays to them. His greatest strength is his ability to be a floor general and set his teammates up. Plays with great pace and rhythm, great court vision and ability to pass. Weakness is his shooting ability.”"

Leadership and an understanding of how to run a team sound like perfect attributes for a Chris Beard point guard.  Even if his outside shot is not a plus (he shot just 26.2% from behind the arc this season), that wouldn’t be an issue for Tech as there are plenty of shooters set to be on the 2020-21 Red Raider team, especially if Moretti returns as he recently indicated that he is leaning towards doing.

Buggs has said that he’s still open to finishing his career at Hawaii.  Goodman also lists San Diego State, Gonzaga, Arkansas, Xavier, Iowa State, Utah State, Fresno State, UTEP, Colorado State, and Northwestern as possible destinations so there isn’t any smoke here when it comes to the Red Raiders.  Still, Buggs has the type of game that would be a perfect complement to what the Red Raiders already have in the fold.
