No. 10: Red on white on red
I must admit that it took me a while to come around on the red Texas Tech helmets. With the Double T already being mostly red, it looked a little washed out when it was placed on a red helmet.
But in recent years, I’ve come around on that helmet concept because the red helmets simply pop, regardless of whether they are worn at night or day. And when they are put on top of white jerseys and red pants as was the case at Kansas State in 2018, they really stand out.
Often, Tech’s road uniforms lack color because they are mainly white and black. That means that red is limited to being just an accent color.
However, in this uniform combination, the Red Raiders live up to their nickname. The look is also set off by the red numbers, which seem to tie everything together.
Unfortunately, in that 2018 game in Manhattan, this uniform combination didn’t yield great results. In what was one of the most pathetic offensive showings in program history, Tech was held to just 181 total yards in a 21-6 loss that essentially put the final nail in Kliff Kingsbury’s coffin. But at least the uniforms popped more than the offense.
