No. 5: Black on red on red

This classic look has to make fans of the color red happy.  Tech’s black helmets over red jerseys and pants are a uniform combination that is purely Red Raider football.

Keeping in mind that the school’s athletic teams were nicknamed the Red Raiders because of the red uniforms they wore in the 1930s, you can think of any look that features red jerseys as an homage to the program’s roots.  And when set beneath black helmets, the red stands out even more.

I once had a friend who played for the University of Texas in the mid-1990s.  He admitted to me that Tech’s color scheme was the best in the Big 12, if not the nation, and who was I to argue?

Scarlet set next to black is a striking contrast and one that has served some of the most iconic franchises in sports well.  Most notably are the Chicago Bulls who were just brought back into the public’s consciousness thanks to the ESPN documentary The Last Dance.

There are also several of the most legendary European soccer clubs use the same color scheme as Tech.  But since I know nothing about soccer, I will let you peruse this article to see who they are.

Some even theorize that red-clad teams win more often than teams with other color combinations.  While Tech doesn’t always win when wearing this uniform combination, the Red Raiders do make a bold statement in it.

It is an inspiring look that is offset by a black helmet which is almost the inverse of the dot at the bottom of an exclamation point.  Though the modern accents, lettering, and numbers might not suggest it, these red jerseys and pants below a black helmet are close to what the program wore at its inception than many realize and that’s why it sits in the top half of this list.
