The Texas Tech football program’s 2021 QB commit, Behren Morton, has seen his stock skyrocket in the recent update of the 247Sports national rankings.

Sometimes the world of college football rankings can be a rollercoaster ride.  Fortunately for the Texas Tech football program’s 2021 QB commit, Behren Morton, that ride is on its way up.  And it’s climbing in a hurry.

In the latest update to the rankings, Morton jumped from No. 191 in the nation to No. 104.  That’s a bump of 87 spots.

The only player ranked in the top 105 who had a higher jump than Morton this time around was Jager Burton, a guard from Kentucky who jumped 109 spots.  He’s now up to No. 61 in the nation in the 247Sports ranking.

Given the current global health crisis, it seems like it might be tough for recruits to make such huge strides in the way they are seen by recruiting services.  That’s because the normal summer camp circuit, which is when prospects are able to showcase their skills in front of talent evaluators, has been eliminated by the coronavirus pandemic.  But that hasn’t kept Morton from vaulting up the list.

Back when he committed to the Red Raiders, Morton was outside the top 200 in the nation.  But that was in mid-October and after a strong finish to his junior season, he’s been one of the hottest names in Texas as well as around the nation.

The Eastland QB, who grew up in Lubbock, threw for 2,766 yards and 29 TDs with only 5 picks this year.  What’s more, he completed 60.1% of his passes.

"Gabe Brooks of 247Sports has the following scouting report: “Adequate frame for a young QB prospect with plenty of space to continue adding bulk. Accurate passer with good completion percentage as a sophomore. Light on his feet in the pocket and consistently sets and fires. Functionally athletic on designed runs and scrambles. Buys time with his legs. Works middle of the field well. Accurate on the run going with or across body. Throws proverbial “catchable” ball. Velocity and downfield strength should continue to develop with maturation. Varies arm angles as needed to deliver with accuracy. Can tighten up and quicken release. Will face significant jump in competition coming from Texas Class 3A ball. Athleticism lacks full context from testing perspective. Legitimate Power 5-caliber quarterback prospect who throws with accuracy and is athletic enough to hurt defenses buying time outside the pocket or with the occasional designed run. Long-term potential to become multi-year starter in college.”"

Tech’s current recruiting class has taken a dip in the rankings after a dry spell when it comes to commitments.  After sitting in the top four of the conference as recently as early May, Tech’s 2021 class is now just No. 57 in the nation and No. 9 in the Big 12.

From April 7 to May 1, six players committed to Matt Wells’ program.  But since then, there have been no more additions from 2021 prospects.

However, Morton’s huge jump will only help to improve the class’s standing.  And if he continues to play his way up the rankings, he could become one of the highest-rated QBs to ever sign with the Red Raiders.
