Texas Tech basketball fans are still waiting on word of Jonathan Kuminga’s decision after he made no announcement on Monday despite a report that said he would.

Despite one report from a Lubbock media member that said he would, the nation’s top player, Jonathan Kuminga made no announcement on his future Monday.  Thus, Texas Tech basketball fans remain captivated by this unprecedented recruiting battle.

Last week, Tobias Bass of Guns Up Nation Tweeted that the top high school player in the nation would make his decision about his future known on June 22.   As we sit here a day later, no word has come down.  And according to Kuminga’s brother, Texas Tech forward Joel Ntambwe, we may continue to wait for a while.

"“We haven’t really decided anything right now,” Ntambwe told 247Sports.  ““We are still trying to go through everything. We really don’t know and haven’t really made up our mind.”"

Thus, Texas Tech basketball fans will have to continue to wait for definitive word while many will continue to look for Easter eggs in every social media post the 6-foot-8 Kuminga releases.  But it is easy to see why there is so much interest in this recruiting battle.

More from Wreck'Em Red

This past season, he put up 16.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game in what was an injury-plagued campaign for his New Jersey high school team.  But when healthy, he scored 22.7 points, grabbed 5.4 rebounds, and handed out 3.2 assists per game on the elite Nike circuit last summer.

What’s more, he was recently awarded the rare perfect recruit score of 1.0000 by 247Sports.com.  That’s something that only five other players since 2003 have been given.  In fact, he’s only the second player since 2013 to earn that score.

Making this recruiting battle so unique is that Tech is reportedly not having to fight off other schools but rather, the NBA G League.  Akin to the minor leagues in baseball, the NBA’s developmental program is now stepping up its efforts to lure some of the nation’s top high school basketball players away from the college game and the fact that they can offer these recruits a 6-figure one-year salary is starting to have an impact.

Many believe that Kuminga is going to head to the G League but if he doesn’t, Tech is thought to be the heavy favorite.  And the longer this recruitment plays out, the more one has to think that Tech is in good shape.

Some Red Raider fans are choosing to believe that the delay in an announcement stems from Kuminga trying to get his transcripts in order so that he can enroll at Tech this fall.  That might make sense because he did just recently reclassify to the class of 2020 by graduating early.

But that is pure speculation and wishful thinking on the part of everyone who looks at the world through scarlet and black glasses.  Only Kuminga and his family know what he plans to do and until they decide to share that news with us, which they didn’t on Monday, all we can do is wait.
