Texas Tech football: Big 12 offensive weapons that will be a problem in 2020
TCU RB Zachary Evans is a 5-star freshman
Another running back that Tech fans had better get used to hearing about is TCU true freshman Zachary Evans. After a rather winding journey through the recruiting process that saw him commit to Georgia after flirting with just about every major program in the nation, he was let out of his commitment to the Bulldogs and he landed in Fort Worth.
The 5-foot-11, 250-pounder from Houston is the highest-rated recruit to ever play for the Horned Frogs. He checks in at No. 16 in the nation overall and No. 2 among running backs.
"Gabe Brooks of 247Sports has the following scouting report: “Dynamically athletic running back with prototype size and frame potential relative to the position. Owns college-ready build with frame space to add more bulk. Flashes elite athleticism verified in combine testing environment. Makes it look easy, sometimes to the point that it’s deceptive. Shows great top-end speed and outstanding close-quarters lateral mobility confirmed by a 3.91 shuttle. Flashes devastating start-stop-start ability in close quarters, coupled with impressive hesitation stutter…Could get on the field immediately at a high-major level and become a Power 5 star, in addition to first-round NFL Draft ceiling.”"
What’s more, there is an opening in the TCU backfield. Last year’s leading rusher, Darius Anderson, has graduated after putting up 823 yards and 6 TDs. Thus, Evans will be handed the ball just about as often as he wants it.
The Frogs also need QB Max Duggan to make strides in 2020 after an up and down first season as a starter. That will be the primary task of offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie. However, it is likely that the Frog offense will revolve around its stellar true freshman RB, Zachary Evans because when you have a player of his caliber, you might as well use him as much as you can.
