Baylor WR Tyquan Thornton has a huge opportunity

In Waco, the star is QB Charlie Brewer who will likely end his senior season as the program’s all-time leading passer.  But who will he be throwing to?

Last year’s leading receiver Denzel Mims is now in the NFL after posting 66 catches and 1,066 yards in 2019.  That elevates second fiddle Tyquan Thornton to the top billing at WR for the Bears.

A season ago, the 6-foot-3, 176-pounder had 782 yards (which would have led the Red Raiders by over 100  yards) and 5 TDs on 45 receptions.  That was good for an average of 17.4 yards per reception.

Thorton has been stuck behind Mims and another NFL receiver, Jalen Hurd, during his career in Waco.  Thus, he’s never had a 1,000-yard season.

What’s more, he’s never really burned the Red Raiders.  In 2018, he caught two passes for 51 yards and a TD, and last season, he hauled in four balls for 83.

But last year, he broke out against one of the best defenses in the BIg 12.  Facing the Iowa State 3-3-5 cloud zone, he had11 receptions for 141 yards thus proving that he can beat the best the conference has to offer.

The offense in Waco is going to revolve around Charlie Brewer’s right arm.  But someone has to catch his passes and Thorton is going to be the one who is asked to step up.
