No. 5: Joel Filani 2006

Current Texas Tech wide receivers coach Joel Filani has some serious skins on the wall that he can point to when showing his players exactly what they need to be doing on the field.  He ranks 10th in program history with 2,626 career yards and 6th in TD catches with 23.  And if any of his players in 2020 can match or best his 2006 season, he will be ecstatic.

As a senior, Filani followed up a 1,000-yard season by catching 91 passes for 1,300 yards and 13 TDs.  Those numbers are good for 9th, 5th, and 4th respectively on the school’s single-season all-time list.

Against Baylor, he caught 8 passes for a season-best 212 yards and 3 TDs.  Four other times, he caught at least 10 passes and in all four, he found the endzone.

A two-time first-team All-Big 12 honoree (2005, 2006) he remains one of the best receivers in program history.  And he had some legendary performances in his career.

His 255 yards against Kansas State in 2005 were the most in program history until 2018.  He caught the game-winning TD in the crazy 2005 win at Nebraska, his third TD of the game.  And in the 2004 Holiday Bowl victory over Aaron Rogers and No. 4 Cal, he averaged 28.8 yards on his five catches including a game-breaking TD.   Hopefully, in 2020 he can coax that type of productivity out of some of his pupils.
