Texas Tech basketball: The all-time Red Raider team from West Texas
Small forward: Jarrett Culver
You could make an argument for Lubbock’s own Jarret Culver being the best player in Red Raider history. But because he played only two years in Lubbock, he won’t sit atop any of the program’s all-time lists. Still, every Texas Tech basketball fan knows just how special the Coronado High School product was in helping Tech get to the Elit 8 and National Title games in his two seasons.
The 2019 Big 12 Player of the Year and second-team All-American is the best player to ever come from Lubbock. He was drafted No. 6 overall in the 2019 Draft, the second-highest any player in program history has ever been taken.
Averaging 14.9 p.p.g. for his career, he was more than an offensive weapon. He was also a fantastic rebounder and a standout defender.
As a senior, Culver put together one of the finest seasons in Tech history. He led Tech in scoring (18.3 points), rebounds (6.4), and assists (3.7) while guiding Tech to the program’s first Final Four appearance.
On this roster, he would be needed to be a defensive ace as well given the liability that both Young and Malaise might be against larger players. But as we saw in 2018-19, Culver was more than capable of being an alpha dog on both ends of the court.
