2016: Mahomes

In 2016, Patrick Mahomes took the college football world by storm and parlayed that into a top-10 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.  The rest is football history.

Throwing for 5,052 yards, 41 TDs, and only 10 picks, the Whitehouse, Texas native was as dynamic as any QB in the history of college football.  What’s more, he ran for 285 more yards and 12 more scores.

Of course, everyone remembers his epic shootout with Baker Mayfield in Lubbock when he set the NCAA record for total yards in a game and he tied the NCAA record for passing yards.  (To relive that game, check out this piece from FanSided’s Kansas City Chief’s site.)

His passing total sits at No. 4 on Texas Tech’s all-time single-season list.  What’s more, his TD total is fifth-best.

2016 was another disappointing season for Kingsbury as the Red Raiders fielded the worst defense in college football statistically.  That season, Tech lost games in which Mahomes and the offense put up 59, 55, 44, 38, and 37 points.  Imagine how bad that year would have been had Mahomes not been Tech’s QB.
