No. 8: Tom Stone

Texas Tech women’s soccer coach Tom Stone may not have the name recognition among the fan base that other people on this list possess, there’s no denying he belongs in the top 10 of Red Raider coaches of the Big 12 era.

Stone has been on the job in Lubbock for 12 years now.  He’s the program’s all-time winningest head coach with 140 victories and along the way, he’s transformed what was once an afterthought of a program into a national contender.

Five times in his tenure he’s taken his team to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.  What’s amazing is that prior to 2012, Tech soccer had never been to the tournament ever in its history.

In 2015, Stone’s team captured the Big 12 title, another first in program history.  And in 2020, many expect his team to repeat that feat.

On Friday, Tech was voted No. 1 in the Big 12 preseason poll as Stone returns eight of eleven starters from a team that reached as high as No. 13 in the national polls last season.

Tome Stone is Texas Tech soccer.  In his career, he’s taken a program that was virtually invisible around Lubbock to playing in front of sold-out crowds and hosting NCAA Tournament games.  That’s why be belongs on this list despite the fact that most people around Lubbock don’t know his name.
