Jacob Morgenstern showed out

When Texas Tech added Duke transfer Jacob Morgenstern to the roster this offseason, most people (myself included) labeled him as a special-teams ace given that he hardly saw the field as a linebacker for the Blue Devils.  But he proved on Saturday that he has more to offer than just that.

Playing the outside LB position, the New York native was all over the field against the Longhorns.  He racked up five tackles with one being solo and one being behind the line of scrimmage.  That constituted a career-high for the senior.

"“Jacob Morgenstern played very well,”  Matt Wells said in his postgame press conference.  “I saw him splash.”"

What was impressive though was the fact that the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder lined up all over the field and was even seen from time to time covering receivers 15-20 yards downfield.

But of course, he also made his mark on special teams, as he was also known to do at Duke.  In the second quarter, he burst through the line to block a UT punt.

Though that play didn’t prove to be a turning point in the game being as Alan Bowman threw an interception just two plays later to end any hopes of a Red Raider scoring strike, it showed just how Morgenstern can change the game on special teams.

But more so, he was impactful on defense against the Longhorns as he showed that he is an all-around player.  Here’s hoping we see more activity from Morgenstern the likes of which we saw this weekend as it seems obvious that he’s going to be a huge part of this year’s defense.
