Texas Tech football: Big 12 power rankings after two conference games
No. 4: TCU
Coming off a 33-31 win in Austin, Gary Patterson’s TCU Horned Frogs are on the upswing. And the good vibes in Fort Worth have been buoyed by the play of QB Max Duggan, who was at one time in danger of not playing at all in 2020.
After finding out just prior to the season that he had a heart condition, Duggan’s availability for 2020 (and possibly beyond) was uncertain. But after coming off the bench in the season opener against Iowa State, the sophomore was the difference-maker against the Longhorns.
Completing 20-30 passes for 231 yards and running 17 times for 79 yards and a pair of TDs, including the game-winning score, Duggan led his team to the program’s seventh win in the last nine meetings with the Horns.
Given Duggan’s ability to run, one has to wonder if he would have been able to lead his team to a win over Iowa State had he played the entire game. Now, he’s got a shot to topple one of the Big 12’s other first-place teams this weekend, Kansas State, when the two purple-clad teams meet in Fort Worth.
The Frogs have a tough stretch coming up with K-State and OU the next two teams on tap. But both games are in Fort Worth meaning that Gary Patterson’s team has an opportunity to really build some momentum before the half-way mark of the season.
