No. 3: Kansas State

At No. 3 in our power rankings comes perhaps the most surprising team in the Big 12 thus far.  With a 2-0 mark in Big 12 play, the Kansas State Wildcats have erased most of the humiliation they suffered in the season opener when they lost to Arkansas State in Manhattan.

On the one hand, K-State’s 2-0 mark in league play is not all that impressive.  That’s because the two teams they’ve beaten thus far, Texas Tech and Oklahoma, are a combined 0-4 in Big 12 play.

But taking down the Sooners, especially in Norman, always carries some cache.  Meanwhile, beating Tech in a game that they trailed in the 4th quarter showed signs of maturity for a program in just its second season under head coach Chris Klieman, especially with a true freshman backup QB having to lead the way.

QB Skylar Thomspon is questionable to play this weekend against TCU after leaving last week’s game against the Red Raiders with an arm injury.  Should freshman backup Will Howard have to make the start, it might put an end to the Wildcats’ perfect start to conference play.  But if Thompson plays, the fun times in the Little Apple might continue for another week.
