We saw last week that West Virginia was slow out of the gates against Kansas. But the Jayhawks were just too incompetent to make their 10-0 first-quarter lead stand up for very long. Still, it does show that WVU can be had early in the game.
In fact, in their only loss of the year, the Mountaineers fell behind Oklahoma State 20-7 by halftime. When you combine that with their game against KU, it shows that twice this year, they’ve been in double-digit holes in the first half.
On the other hand, Tech has also fallen behind by multiple scores in each of the last two games. That included a 21-7 deficit at the intermission against Iowa State.
When you fall behind by multiple scores to a fantastic defense like Iowa State or West Virginia, it makes life almost impossible for your offense by making it one-dimensional. That’s not wise and it can’t be how Tech lives today.
Last year, Tech was up 21-3 on West Virginia after one quarter and that allowed the Red Raiders to cruise to an uneventful win. While life isn’t likely to be that easy today, getting off to another fast start could be the key to another Red Raider win in this series.
