Texas Tech football: Three Baylor offensive weapons to know
Brewer is having his worst year as a collegiate
Charlie Brewer entered this season considered by many to be one of the three best QBs in the Big 12 along with UT’s Sam Ehlinger and Iowa State’s Brock Purdy. However, through five games, he’s not lived up to that billing.

In fact, he’s having his worst year as a collegiate. So far, he’s put up career lows in completion percentage (61.5%), yards per attempt (6.5), and QB rating (130.9).
Some of that likely falls at the feet of his receivers and some of that may be due to a change in offensive systems, a change that was only made more difficult by COVID-19’s impact on the offseason. It’s also worth noting that the Bears’ o-line has struggled giving up three sacks per game, third-most on average in the Big 12.
Still, this isn’t the same Charlie Brewer that the Big 12 has seen over the last three seasons. That’s especially true when it comes to the use of his legs.
So far, Brewer isn’t being asked to run the ball at all and that’s arguably his best ability. He’s got just 37 yards this year on 50 carries (15 of which are sacks). He’s averaging only 0.7 yards per carry which is by far a career-low. But after the way TCU QB Max Duggan torched the Red Raiders on the ground last week, one has to think that the Bears will test Tech with Brewer’s feet.
Regardless of this year’s struggles, Brewer is the head of the snake for Baylor. He’s the man through which everything runs and he still has the competitive ability that has made him one of the Big 12’s best winners and he will be who the Red Raiders devise their entire defensive gameplan around.
