If Texas Tech moves forward without David Yost, here are ten coaches who could be fits to replace him.

After a dud of a 2020 season for Texas Tech football, fans are divided on whether head coach Matt Wells deserves to stick around for a third year in Lubbock. But it seems like most fans agree that, at the very least, offensive coordinator David Yost should not be allowed to return in 2021. I’m of the opinion that Wells should get another year, but he absolutely needs to replace Yost.

We haven’t heard anything from the Texas Tech athletic department thus far about whether any coaching changes will be made, so we still don’t know what AD Kirby Hocutt and Wells are thinking. But let’s assume for a moment that Wells is going to return next season but acknowledges the need to revamp the offensive coaching staff.

The need for change is obvious. Texas Tech currently sits 35th nationally in passing offense and 38th in total offense (those numbers could change slightly as other teams still have games to play, but they won’t change a lot). This is the first time the Red Raiders have finished outside the top 11 in passing offense since before Mike Leach arrived in Lubbock, and it’s the first time since 2001 that they’ve finished outside the top 16 in total offense.

Wells is going to need to bring in a coach who can inject some life into what became a disjointed attack this year. The offense struggled to move the ball and score points, and they turned it over too frequently. There’s plenty of talent here, so the new coach will have enough to work with.

I’ve come up with 10 coaches who could be potential targets/fits to replace Yost. Five of them have direct ties to Texas Tech and five do not. One name I’ve left off the list is TCU offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie, despite the fact that he played at Tech and coached here under Kliff Kingsbury. Coming to Tech would be a lateral move, and the TCU offense hasn’t exactly been lighting up the scoreboard, so I don’t see Tech pursuing Cumbie.

So with that out of the way, here are my 10 names to keep an eye on if Wells enters the market for a new offensive coordinator. All statistics are courtesy of sports-reference.com unless otherwise linked.
