Texas Tech basketball: Players to watch tonight vs. Abilene Christian
Peavy is coming off of a game in which he was shutout
It is apparent that true freshman Micah Peavy is going to be a key cog in this year’s rotation and right now, he’s starting with sophomore Kevin McCullar Jr. still working his way back from an ankle injury. Now, Peavy might be even more important to the Red Raiders given that sophomore Terrence Shannon Jr. is also hobbled by a sprained ankle and may not play tonight. (Beard said Tuesday that Shannon is a game-time decision but that he hasn’t practiced since sustaining his injury on Sunday.)
So Peavy may need to help carry some of the offensive load, especially if Shannon is unable to go. But Peavy is coming off of a game in which he failed to score a point against Grambling. It was the second time on the young season that the Duncanville native has been held without scoreless.
Sunday, Peavy saw 24 minutes of action but took only three shots. You’d have to think that he will get more looks tonight, especially if Shannon is sidelined. And he’s going to have to make the most of those opportunities, especially those that come outside of the paint.
Through five games, Peavy has been inconsistent, as one may expect with a true freshman. He has games with 14 and 12 points and he’s averaging 6.8 on the season but at times, he’s been hard to notice, especially on offense and that needs to change for Tech to make a run in Big 12 play, especially until the roster is back to full health.
Therefore, let’s keep an eye on Micah Peavy tonight. He has two more games to get his feet wet before Big 12 play and he needs to begin putting together some consistent performances starting tonight.
