20:  Jahmi’us Ramsey

We’ve come to our first of two one-and-done players on this list, Jahmi’us Ramsey.  The Duncanville native was the highest-ranked recruit to ever sign with Tech at the time that he inked his letter of intent and in his lone season on the South Plains, he didn’t disappoint.

Named the 2020 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, he led Tech in scoring at 15 points per game.  What’s more, had last season not been cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, he likely would have broken Zhaire Smith‘s Texas Tech basketball freshman scoring record of 417 points given that Ramsey was just nine points shy of that mark when the season was halted.

What made Ramsey such an effective scorer was his proficiency from beyond the arc.  Though that wasn’t what he was known for as a recruit, he proved to be one of the best 3-point shooters in Tech history.

His 41 made 3-pointers in Big 12 play ranks tied for sixth-most ever by a Red Raider.  In all, he was a 41.8% shooter in league play.

Ramsey also holds the distinction as one of only two freshmen in Tech history to lead the team in scoring.  And in 2019-20, he reached double-digits in 21 of the 27 games he appeared in.  That included seven 20-point performances.

Ramsey was just the second Red Raider to be a one-and-done NBA draft pick in Tech history.  This past October, he was selected in the second round by the Sacramento Kings.  That gave Tech its third-straight NBA draft pick, a rarity for this program.

So though we didn’t get to enjoy Ramsey’s work for as long as we would have liked, the truth is that he proved to be as good as advertised.  But by being a 3-point weapon more than a slashing guard, he made his hay in a much different manner than we expected.
