Texas Tech football: What to know about Sonny Cumbie’s time at TCU
Cumbie has a track record of putting players in the NFL
One way to measure how healthy a college football program might be is to look at how often that program puts players into the NFL. While at TCU, Cumbie did a respectable job in that regard.
Since the 2015 NFL Draft, nine TCU offensive players have been selected. In that same time frame, only six Red Raider offensive players have been taken.
What’s more impressive on Cumbie’s resume when it comes to draft picks is that his offense has produced a pair of first-round wide receivers. In 2016, Josh Doctson was selected no. 22 overall by Washington and in 2020, Jalen Reagor was the no. 21 pick by Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech has not had a first-round receiver since Michael Crabtree in 2009. What’s more, since then, only three Red Raider wide receivers have been taken at all.
Also impressive is the number of offensive linemen that Cumbie’s offense has put into the league. In his tenure in Cowtown, he had six linemen selected. During that same time period, Tech had just one.
While some may choose to give more credit to the position coaches than the coordinators for the development of players, the truth is that Cumbie, as head of the offense, deserves his share of the credit as well. And the hope is that he can start to put Texas Tech players in the NFL at the rate he did at TCU.
