QB

The most fascinating aspect of this offseason will be what happens at the QB spot.  And Wells simply must get that position group figured out if he wants to save his job.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment from 2020, what makes it feel like a wasted season, is that we have less of an idea about the future of the position than we did a year ago at this time when we all believed that Alan Bowman would be a long-term solution if he could just remain healthy.

He did that in 2020 but didn’t play well enough to be considered a lock to lead this program into the future.  In fact, it now appears that Tech needs an upgrade at the game’s most important position in order to be competitive in the Big 12.

There are two intriguing freshmen in the mix with redshirt Donovan Smith, a 6-foot-5 dual-threat QB from Frienship H.S. who missed the entire season with an injury, and 2021 4-star signee Behren Morton both expected to be serious challengers for the starting job.  Both will be ready to compete in spring practice and that will make this one of the most intriguing springs in the modern era of the program given that QB battles of this nature and scope have been rare.

But don’t be surprised if Tech brings a QB in from the transfer portal as well.  But whether or not they land one who is good enough to start remains to be seen.

In each of the last two offseasons, Tech has added a QB from the portal but neither Jackson Tyner nor Colombi were thought to be legitimate starters when they joined the program.  But this year, there are a number of high-caliber players in the portal.

There are currently eight QBs in the portal who were 4-star signees out of high school and who are as of yet uncommitted to a new program.  If Tech adds one of them, it will be a sign that they want more competition for the starting job however, one has to wonder if any will come to Lubbock without a guarantee of playing time.  Still, don’t be surprised to see Tech bring another passer into the program to compete for the job because this year, more than any before, it will be imperative that Tech has plenty of options at the position.
