Sunday in Waco, the Baylor Bears had an insane shooting day and the Texas Tech basketball team couldn’t keep pace in a 88-73 loss.
Some days, all you can do is tip your hat to your opponent. That’s what the Texas Tech basketball team had to do following Sunday’s 88-73 loss to Baylor in Waco.
It wasn’t that Tech played poorly or that the effort wasn’t there from Chris Beard’s team. The problem was simply that Baylor, and specifically guard Macio Teague, couldn’t miss from outside.
As a team, Baylor was 15-24 from 3-point range. And Teague, who entered the game shooting around 34% from beyond the arc, was an unbelievable 10-12 on his way to a game-high 35 points. And Tech simply couldn’t keep up.
For a moment, Tech was able to make this game interesting. After falling into an early 16-3 hole, the Red Raiders were able to pull to within 34-32 at the intermission.
But ultimately, Baylor was able to overwhelm the Red Raiders in the second half. It seemed as if every loose ball found its way to a BU player and the result of each one of those extra possessions ended in a bucket…usually a 3-pointer.
Kyler Edwards did his best to try to keep Tech in the game scoring 18 points. It was a continuation of his recent strong play as he’s now scored in double digits in his last four games.

But the Red Raiders needed more than just one player to have a big game and that didn’t happen. Mac McClung was held to just 7 points on 3 of 9 shooting. Meanwhile, Terrence Shannon, Tech’s second-leading scorer put up 11 points, which was far from enough to keep the Red Raiders in the game.
This was a game that Tech hoped to put in the win column to boost its NCAA Tournament resume. However, that didn’t happen and now, Tech is locked in to the No. 6 seed in the Big 12 Tournament where the Red Raiders will face No. 3 seed West Virginia on Thursday. Had Tech been able to beat Baylor and TCU beat Texas later tonight, the Red Raiders could have jumped to the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament but that didn’t happen thanks to Teague and the Bears.
Tech has now lost four straight games to Baylor and Chris Beard remains winless in Waco as head coach of the Red Raiders. The latest was a case of a player having a career day and when that happens for the No. 3 team in the nation, it’s almost impossible to pull off the upset.
Somedays, you are the windshield and some days you are the bug. Unfortunately, on Sunday, Tech was the latter as the Bears shot the Red Raiders right out of Waco.
