Needing to add as many as eight new players to the roster this offseason, we knew that Texas Tech basketball head coach Mark Adams would be busy in the transfer portal.  And one of the players in the portal that Tech fans need to keep an eye on is Alfonso Plummer.

The 6-foot-1 Utah transfer has released his top five schools and Texas Tech is included along with Illinois, Georgia, Florida, and BYU.  What’s more, Plummer has Tweeted that he will make his decision on Saturday meaning that this is a recruiting battle that we will get a quick resolution on.

Last year with the Utes, Plummer averaged 13.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game.  He shot 44.1% from the field and 38.3% from 3-point range.

A native of Puerto Rico by way of Arizona, Plummer will have only one year of eligibility remaining after spending a pair of seasons at the JUCO ranks where he earned All-American honors, and two years at Utah.  Still, he could be a huge addition for a Texas Tech squad that is in desperate need of help at the guard position after the defections of both Mac McClung and Kyler Edwards.

Originally declaring his intention to enter the NBA Draft, Plummer is now committed to going back to school for at least one more year.  That could be good news for Adams and Co. given this team’s desperate need for a shooting guard.

Plummer is a streaky shoot-first player.  In fact, in the first round of the 2020 PAC 12 Tournament, he drained 11 3-pointers as part of a career-best 35-point performance.  That’s the type of outside shooting prowess that Texas Tech was missing this past season.

Seeing McClung and Edwards jump ship in recent days has left Tech with some serious holes to fill in the backcourt.  That duo averaged 25.6 points per game this past season and was responsible for 103 of the 185 3-pointers the Red Raiders managed to make as a team.

As for Plummer, he made more 3’s than either Edwards or McClung this past year with 64 on 167 attempts.  For what it’s worth, Edwards attempted 134 and McClung 137 for the season.

It will be interesting to see how this and other transfer portal recruiting battles play out early in the Mark Adams tenure.  That’s because they give the new Texas Tech head coach an opportunity to prove wrong those who believe he is not an ace recruiter.  So keep an eye on Alfonso Plummer because Tech is squarely in the mix for his services and we will apparently find out in short order if he will be heading to Lubbock this year.
