QB Tyler Shough

Texas Tech football fans have hardly had an opportunity to get to know QB Tyler Shough.  After all, he’s been a Red Raider for less than two months after transferring to Tech from Oregon in March.

But Tech fans may not want to get too attached to the Arizona native because many think he’ll be a Red Raider for one year only.  But if he is, it will likely mean that 2021 is a success and that Wells will have saved his job.

Entering the offseason, this program’s greatest question was the QB spot following the transfer of Alan Bowman to Michigan.  But when Shough was brought into the fold, it calmed many fears that Red Raider fans had about the immediate future of the position.

That’s because Shough is the most talented QB Tech has had on the roster since Patrick Mahomes in 2016.  What’s more, as a high school prospect he was a 4-star signee which would make him the first former 4-star player since Graham Harrell to start a game for the Red Raiders should he earn the job as almost everyone expects.

If Shough follows up 2020 (a season in which he started all seven of Oregon’s games and threw for 1,559 yards and 13 TDs with 6 picks) with a stellar 2021, many think he could be a first-round pick in the 2022 Draft.  In fact, some believe he could be one of the first QBs taken next year as College Football News has him rated the No. 5 draftable QB in the nation heading into the fall.

So get to know Shough but don’t get terribly attached to him.  He is almost certain to be this team’s starter in 2021 and if he excels, he could be playing on Sundays in 2022.  And no one would be happier about that than Matt Wells because it would mean that he has found a way to save his job.
