Wednesday, the Texas Tech football program continued its recent hot streak on the recruiting front by adding 3-star offensive lineman Sheridan Wilson to the 2022 class.  That makes five recruits who have given their verbal pledge to Matt Wells and Co. this month.

Wilson, a product of Argyle, Texas, is 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds.  He’s rated the No. 54 interior offensive lineman in the nation and the No. 152 player in Texas by 247Sports.

In addition to Tech, he holds offers from TCU, Washington State, Arizona State, Colorado, Memphis, North Texas, and others.  Interestingly, his brother Preston is currently an offensive lineman at Oklahoma State yet Sheridan does not seem to have any interest in the Cowboys.

Wilson is yet another player to commit to the Red Raiders after taking a visit to Lubbock in June.  That’s further proof that the 15-month long COVID-19 dead period hurt Tech’s recruiting more than it did most programs.  Getting players on campus and out to West Texas is a key component of Tech’s recruiting strategy given that Tech is not a blue-blood school that can recruit based on name recognition and tradition alone.  And with this month’s wave of commitments, we are being reminded of just how important the in-person component of recruiting is for the Red Raider coaching staff.

However, there is still plenty of work for Wells and his staff to do on the recruiting front.  According to 247Sports, Tech still has the lowest-rated 2022 class in the Big 12 at the time of this posting.  But that’s largely because it is also one of the smallest classes in the conference with only TCU having fewer players in the fold at this time.

Wilson’s commitment helps bolster the program’s offensive line depth, which is something that is essential in every recruiting cycle.  He is the second high school OL to give his pledge to the Red Raiders this month joining Kaden Weatherby from Colorado.

Given that Tech will lose starting tackle T.J. Storment and starting guard Josh Burger after this year and with the possibility that this could be starting center Dawson Deaton’s final year as he is an NFL prospect, Tech needs to stockpile more offensive line talent in this recruiting class.

Last year, the program added only three high school offensive linemen to the mix.  Interestingly, one of them, Jack Tucker, is also from Argyle.

Tech also added only three linemen in the class of 2020.  What’s more, one of them, Ethan Carde, was a JUCO signee.  Unfortunately, we learned last season that Carde is not up to par as a Big 12 starter as he lost his starting job to freshman Caleb Rogers in November meaning that his impact on the program is likely to be minimal moving forward unless injury thrusts him back into a key role.

The point is that Tech’s offensive line depth is not where it needs to be and it has been a while since the program has added a full class.  However, the days of taking five high school or JUCO linemen could be in the past given the way this coaching staff loves to fish in the transfer portal.

Still, continuing to add quality pieces like Sheridan Wilson will be key for this program.  That’s why Wednesday’s commitment is such good news for Red Raider fans.
