The Texas Tech football team had an impressive showing Saturday night against Florida International.  Here are our game balls for the 54-21 win.

Tyler Shough

No player on the roster needed a rebound performance more than QB Tyler Shough who had arguably his worst game as a starter last week against Stephen F. Austin.  Fortunately, he bounced back in a big way against Florida International.

Completing 25-35 passes for 399 yards and four TDs while not turning the ball over, the transfer from Oregon set a career-high in passing yards.  And in doing so, Shough was able to quell some concerns about his readiness to lead the Red Raiders into conference play this coming weekend.

"“I feel we get better every week and it’s been our goal, every day, every practice, we are going to practice even harder coming into this week, because we practice harder every week, we got to keep going because we aren’t satisfied,” Shough said after the game."

It would have been hard for anyone on the Red Raider offense to be satisfied with what was put forth in the SFA game, especially Shough who threw for just 174 yards on 12-22 passing.  And most damning was the fact that he turned the ball over three times.

But this week, Shough was nearly flawless as he didn’t come close to giving the football away.  He also found eleven receivers, which was important given how much the offense had been relying on star wideout Erik Ezukanma.

We have to remember that Shough still has some room to grow as a QB.  After all, he’s now made just 10 starts in his career, which is less than a full season’s worth of games.

Thus, we can expect to see him improve as 2021 moves along and Saturday night was a nice step in his development as a starter.  That’s why he earns a game ball.
