Texas Tech football: Top 5 offensive weapons Tech will face this season
Houston QB Clayton Tune
Given how poorly he played against the Red Raiders in the 2021 season opener, many Red Raider fans may not think too highly of Houston QB Clayton Tune. After all, the last time Tech fans saw him against our team, he was being picked off four times while throwing for only 174 yards as the Red Raiders stormed past the Cougars 38-21 in Houston.
But after that atrocious performance, Tune would go on to have an impressive season. Leading U of H to a 12-2 record last fall, he passed for 3,544 yards and 30 TDs. And after playing the Red Raiders, he would toss only six more TDs all season while having only one other game with multiple picks.
Now, it must be noted that Tune did not face the stiffest competition last season. Outside of Tech, the only teams with a pulse that he faced were Cincinnati, SMU, and an Auburn team that would finish 2021 at just 6-7.
But what is concerning about Tune from a Tech perspective is that he may have figured out how to take care of the football. Up to last year, his greatest weakness was his proclivity for throwing the ball to the other team and that kept him from being a truly elite QB.
However, if he’s put his INT troubles behind him, he could be a dangerous QB to face. Last year, he had a pass efficiency rating of 158.0 (to put that in perspective, Pat Mahomes’ best year in that stat was 157.0 in 2016).
So don’t discount Tune when he brings his Cougars to Lubbock in week two just because he struggled against the Red Raiders last year. He appears to have matured as a passer and that could make him a tough player to deal with early in the season.
