Texas Tech football: Streaks that need to end in 2022
12 seasons without a winning Big 12 record
The last time Texas Tech had a winning record in Big 12 play was 2009. That year, President Barack Obama was sworn into office, the movie “The Blind Side” hit theaters, Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face” was the top song of the year, and Michael Jackson passed away.
Meanwhile, the Texas Tech football program would follow up the magical 2008 season with a solid 9-4 season. Despite shuffling the QB duties between Taylor Potts and Steven “Sticks” Sheffield, Mike Leach would guide Tech to a 5-3 league mark in his final season as head coach.
That year, Tech defeated Kansas State, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Baylor while falling to Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma State. But what’s funny is that most fans were disappointed with that showing.
Now, many Texas Tech football fans would give their right foot to have the Red Raiders manage five wins in Big 12 action. After all, it’s been since October of 2018 that we’ve seen Tech even secure back-to-back conference wins.
This year, Tech has the unbalanced Big 12 schedule in its favor with five of the nine conference games taking place at Jones Stadium. However, that doesn’t necessarily guarantee anything since three of those five opponents are No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 10 Baylor, and No. 18 Texas.
Also, long gone are the days when playing in Lubbock was one of the scariest tasks in the Big 12. In fact, 2020’s 3-2 home Big 12 record stands as the only winning league mark that the program has produced since 2009.
There is no denying that McGuire must return the fun to Jones Stadium by winning Big 12 games. That’s something that this fanbase is desperate for. Although the 2022 home schedule brings three rather formidable Big 12 teams to Lubbock, Tech still needs to find a way to have a winning home record in league play and a winning Big 12 record overall to start to win back the hearts of the home faithful.
