Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma

Texas Tech will end the year with one last shot at taking down Oklahoma in Lubbock.  But unlike when Texas comes to the 806 for the last time, Tech won’t get one last win over the Sooners at Jones Stadium.

By this point in the season, OU might have figured out its defense under new head coach Brent Venables, the former DC at Clemson.  If that’s the case, going could be tough for Tech.

However, the OU defense is returning only three starters.  The problem though is that by the last game of the year, the Sooners could be playing their best on that side of the ball.

Offensively, will we find that the Sooners will be able to continue to put up video game numbers without Lincoln Riley orchestrating the offense?  They will be relying on ultra-productive transfer QB Dillon Gabriel to help lead the way.

In the end, I just can’t pick Tech to beat both Texas and OU in McGuire’s first year.  The likelihood of that happening is just too small given that that’s never happened in my two-plus decades as a Red Raider.

If this game were earlier in the year, I’d give Tech a better shot as OU will be breaking in a new scheme on both sides of the ball just like Tech.  However, the Sooners still should have a substantial talent surplus in this matchup and that will help carry them to a win in Lubbock.

Still, going 7-5 in McGuire’s first season would be a rousing success for Tech, especially given how tough this year’s non-conference schedule is.  If that happens, it would mark the first time since the 2009-2010 seasons that Tech would have won at least seven games in back-to-back seasons and that’s something that all Tech fans would love to see happen.
