Saturday’s win over the Texas Longhorns will no doubt go down in program history as one of the greatest signature wins. Joey McGuire became the first head coach to beat Texas at home since the famous “Crabtree Catch” game in 2008. Twice in three weeks, McGuire has led the Red Raiders to two upset wins at home over ranked opponents.

After the game, the coach spoke highly of being 1-0 in Big 12 Conference play is what matters the most. Now the question becomes: Can this upset win serve as a springboard to keep the momentum going for the rest of the season?

Tech has not won its opening Big 12 game since 2018 when the team upset No. 15 Oklahoma State in Stillwater. However, the following week the team fell flat losing to West Virginia at home. What’s more, not since 2018 have the Red Raiders won back-to-back conference games. That season the team beat TCU and then Kansas in consecutive weeks.

“Momentum” is one of the most powerful words in college football. It can be the difference on one play, in one game, and especially in a win. At 3-1 in McGuire’s first year at the helm, this team has plenty of momentum moving forward. Wins like this can kickstart something special. Confidence and faith in McGuire are at a high right now with the players and more importantly the fans.

The road does not get any easier going into this week though. The team’s next opponent is Kansas State on the road in Manhattan, a place Tech has not won at since 2008. The Wildcats have plenty of momentum and confidence moving into this week as well as they are coming off of an upset win on the road against No. 6 Oklahoma.

McGuire’s squad failed the first test this season after coming off a big win against then No. 25 Houston, losing by double-digits on the road at N.C. State. In that game, the Red Raiders failed to carry over any momentum from the previous week and the team came out flat. For McGuire to continue building faith in “The Brand”, his team must continue to build momentum against Kansas State and the rest of the Big 12 for the remainder of this season.
