How will “freak” defensive back Kolbey Taylor match up with the big Texas Tech outside receivers?

Interestingly, Wyoming had a player included on this year’s edition of Bruce Feldman’s “Freaks” list.  At 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, Kolbey Taylor is a physically gifted corner and he will be asked to match up with one of Tech’s talented and big outside receivers, Loic Fouonji or Jerand Bradley.

The rest of Wyoming’s corners on the two-deep are all 6-foot-1 or shorter so Tech should be able to have a size advantage on one side of the field regardless of where Wyoming deploys Taylor.  What’s more, Taylor is still an unproven commodity.

A redshirt sophomore from Houston, he has appeared in only ten career games.  Surprisingly, he has racked up a meager three career tackles all of which came last year in nine appearances.  Also, he’s got no career pass defenses on his stat sheet.

Because of that, it would be wise for Tech to test Taylor to see if he is capable of matching up with Bradley, Fouonji, or even Jordan Brown (who is a smaller outside receiver at just 6 feet tall).  Also, might Wyoming try to put Taylor on one of Tech’s massive tight ends, Mason Tharp or Baylor Cupp, in the red zone?  That would be an interesting matchup on jump balls.

There aren’t a ton of players on the Wyoming roster that pique the interest of NFL teams but because of his size, Taylor does.  However, he appears to be raw as a corner and it will be interesting to see if he can handle the physical and dangerous Red Raider outside receivers.
