Texas Tech football: 3 Predictions for Red Raiders vs. Wyoming

The Texas Tech football season has finally arrived as week one is upon us.  This is the 99th season in program history and one of the most anticipated.  Today’s game against Wyoming can’t come soon enough and here are three predictions about what will happen this evening in Laramie.

The Texas Tech defense will outplay the Wyoming defense

This matchup pits two teams with vastly different reputations against one another.  While the Red Raiders are known for traditionally being a high-powered offensive program, Wyoming is generally thought to be a stingy, tough-nose, defensive-minded program.

However, after this game, people will be talking about Tech’s defense in glowing terms, not Wyoming’s.

First of all, the Red Raider defense has a much easier task ahead of it.  Wyoming’s offense is a one-dimensional attack with the passing game being a non-factor for the Cowboys.

As a result, Tech will be able to load the box in order to throw extra defenders at the Wyoming ground attack.  Though the Red Raiders struggled against the run last year, Wyoming won’t be able to have the type of success on the ground that balanced Big 12 teams did against Tech in 2022.

Meanwhile, Tech’s offense presents far more challenges for the Cowboy defense.  Wyoming will be spread thin trying to take away everything that the Red Raiders do well.

If they load up to stop Tahj Brooks, then Tyler Shough and the passing game will have a big day.  Or, if Wyoming tries to play more defensive backs to try to make life difficult on Shough, Tech’s running backs and offensive line will be able to pick up yards in chunks.

Ultimately, Tech’s athletes on offense will be too much for Wyoming’s defense to handle.  There are simply too many dangerous weapons at Tech’s disposal for the Cowboys to contend with.

Last year, Tech averaged 30.5 points per game last season while Wyoming put up just over 21.  That’s why the defense that will have the better showing will be Texas Tech’s.  It will be a great start to the season for a unit that the Red Raiders believe will be one of the best in the Big 12.
