Texas Tech Football: Red Raiders land highest recruit in program history, Micah Hudson

Texas Tech football might be 0-2 to start the 2023 season, but they secured a major victory on the recruiting trail Monday night. Five-star class of 2024 receiver Micah Hudson announced his commitment to the Red Raiders via Twitter, making him the highest-rated recruit to commit in program history. Hudson has been one of head coach Joey McGuire’s prime recruiting targets for the better part of the last year and now he’s set to become a Red Raider

Hudson out of Lake Belton High School in Temple, TX is rated the second-best player at his position and second of all players in Texas according to Rivals.com. Meanwhile, 247Sports ranks him as the eighth-best receiver in the country and fourth overall recruit in the state. Needless to say, the Red Raiders just landed the valedictorian of their 2024 recruiting class.

With Hudson’s commitment, Tech’s recruiting class for 2024 has jumped to 23rd overall according to both 247Sports and Rivals.com. The class was already loaded with talent including three four-star recruits according to 247Sports’ rankings with four according to Rivals.com. Those include quarterback Will Hammond, edge rusher Cheta Ofili, offensive tackle Ellis Davis, and offensive lineman Holton Hendrix.

At six feet with incredible speed and quickness, Hudson is the perfect fit for the Red Raider offense. His team the Lake Belton Broncos have had a strong start to their season at 2-1. After putting up over 100 receiving yards in their first game, Hudson had 74 yards with two touchdowns in week two.  In last week’s game, Hudson took over with 142 receiving yards on just three catches while playing in a nationally televised game broadcast on ESPN2. His biggest play came on a 62-yard touchdown pass to give his team their first score.

Hudson has taken several visits to the Texas Tech campus beginning in April 2022. He visited during last season in October when Tech hosted Baylor on the same night Patrick Mahomes was inducted into the Texas Tech Ring of Honor.

During the spring he visited twice in March and took two more visits in June and July during the summer. Based on the amount of visits and plenty of attention from the coaching staff, it is easy to see why he chose to commit to the Red Raiders.

With the great history of Texas Tech receivers from Michael Crabtree, Wes Welker, and Danny Amendola just to name a few, the modern-day Red Raiders might have just landed their next face of the program. Hudson still has a lot to consider as a young high school recruit, but his heart seems set on staying close to home. He chose Tech over Alabama, Texas, Baylor, A&M, and LSU just to name a few. If he follows through and does sign with the program in December, Hudson can be an electric piece of Zach Kittley’s offense.

Hudson’s announcement does not guarantee he will be wearing scarlet and black in 2024, but a commitment is a commitment. Tech will have to wait until signing day for Hudson’s decision to be final and there will be a lot of pressure from other suitors who will try to get him to flip.

However, Hudson has been leaning toward Texas Tech for quite some time so this seems like a solid commitment.  For a program McGuire is still continuing to build, landing the highest-rated recruit in history is a great selling point and a massive victory.
