Texas Tech will host Kansas on Big Monday

While the Texas game in Lubbock will be the season’s hottest ticket, the February 12 meeting with Kansas will also be a big event for the people of the South Plains.  It will also be the only time this year that Tech will play on ESPN’s Big Monday.

Though no one in the Big 12 wants to hear this, Kansas is going to be the preseason favorite to win the National Championship.  In fact, this might be one of the best rosters Bill Self has assembled during his remarkable run in Lawrence.

For instance, ESPN legend Dick Vitale ranks KU atop his preseason Top 25.  He won’t be the only one to do so either.

KU returns almost every key contributor from last season except forward Grady Dick who was a one-and-done collegiate.  What’s more, the Jayhawks are adding the top transfer in the country, former Michigan forward Hunter Dickinson a 7-footer who averaged 18.5 points and 9 rebounds per game last season.

Also returning for KU is former Red Raider, Kevin McCullar Jr.  The former fan favorite in Lubbock turned heel when he left the program two seasons ago to join a Big 12 rival.  However, now that we all understand the dysfunction that infected the program during the end of the Beard era and the two years of Adams’ rule, many Red Raiders are now a bit more forgiving of his decision to leave.

Of course, that won’t stop people in Lubbock from giving McCullar hell when he makes his final visit to town in mid-February.

Tech is just 7-36 all-time against KU in Big 12 play.  However, three of those wins have come since 2018.

What’s more, KU’s last three wins at United Supermarkets Arena have been by less than five points.  So buckle up for another slugfest when KU comes to town in February.  It will be the only time these schools meet in the regular season and it will be a can’t-miss event for the people of Lubbock.
